FY2021-2022 Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Deadline: Closed)

The Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Fulbright TEA) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of States, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IREX.

Fulbright TEA Program brings international teachers to the United States for a six-week program in January 2022 or September 2022 to take academic seminars for professional development at a host university and to observe and share their expertise with teachers and students at the host university and at local secondary schools, pending availability of FY2021 funds.

Three grants are available for Malaysian secondary school teachers of English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Math, Science, and Social Studies, including Special Education teachers in those subjects. Please note that as a Fulbright program, all Fulbright TEA program policies and participants will be subject to the regulations for teacher exchange participants established by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB). 

University Coursework:

As part of the application, candidates should indicate whether they prefer to take part in the program beginning in January 2022 or September 2022. The program will consist of general academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, student-centered learning, content-based instruction, lesson planning, and instructional technology training for teachers. The program will include a practicum of at least 40 hours with a U.S. partner teacher in a secondary school near the host university to actively engage participants in the U.S. classroom environment. Cultural enrichment, mentoring and support will be provided to participants throughout the program. The program will provide participants with practical resources they can use in their teaching, as well as skills to train trainers.

Participating teachers will be placed in groups of approximately 20 at a U.S. university schools of education. U.S. host universities will be responsible for arranging the 40-hour practicum, designing specialized seminars for the teachers, and ensuring that each group has access to a variety of relevant professional development and cultural activities.  


  • Be citizen of Malaysia.
  • Secondary-level teachers include both middle and high school teachers serving students between approximately 12 and 18 years of age. Be full-time teachers of English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Math, Science, or Social Studies including Special Education teachers in those subjects at institutions serving primarily a local population are eligible for the program.
  • Have earned a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Have completed at least five years of full-time teaching by the start of the program.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continue teaching after completion of program.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must reside in Malaysia at the time of application
  • Have submitted a complete application.

Please note that this is an upper level university or graduate level academic program for practicing teachers. Educational administrators (such as representatives or officials of Ministry of Education) and school administrators who do not teach at least fifty percent of their time, full-time teacher trainers, university faculty, private English Language tutors, and teachers from schools primarily serving expatriates are not eligible. Applicants must reside in the country of citizenship at the time of application and of program participation.

All candidates must have sufficient oral and written English language skills to take part in specialized seminars and give presentations in U.S. schools. Participation in the Fulbright TEA program is primarily open to teachers who are able to demonstrate English Language proficiency and have a minimum Toefl iBT score of 50.

Deadline: April 19, 2021.

MACEE will recruit, interview and nominate outstanding teachers for the program. An independent panel based in Washington, D.C. will determine the final selection. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified and tentative interview will be in April/May 2021.

English Language Testing: All candidates nominated for the program must take the TOEFL iBT test. MACEE will make the testing arrangements. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please answer all questions as fully as possible.
