FULBRIGHT MALAYSIAN AWARD

2013-2014 FULBRIGHT MALAYSIAN GRADUATE STUDY AND RESEARCH PROGRAM

The Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) is pleased to announce its annual competition for grants under the Fulbright Program for graduate level study (Masters or Ph.D. degrees) and research in the United States for 2013-2014 academic year. Grants under the Malaysian Fulbright student program will be administered as either degree or non-degree grants (Dissertation Research), depending on whether the applicant is seeking to complete coursework or research towards a degree program at a Malaysian university or is seeking to obtain a degree from an American institution.

 

 

PERIOD OF AWARD 

All grants are for periods of one academic year. Degree-track grants may be renewed for a second year. Please note that grant renewals are recommended for approval by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarships Board on a case-by-case basis and are not automatically renewable.

 

NATURE OF AWARD

Awards will be partial grants or otherwise require cost-sharing from the candidate's home institution, scholarships or other funding from the admitting university or from personal resources.  The amount of any specific award will be based upon available funding and other criteria as determined by the academic committee during the selection  process. All decisions regarding category and amount of grant shall be final. Similarly, the amount of renewal funding shall be contingent upon financial circumstances affecting the Commission. For graduate degree grants, efforts will be made to retain funding levels from the first to the second year. However, students should not assume this will take place.

   

PLACEMENT OF GRANTEE

Institute of International Education (IIE) will assist applicants in securing placement at a regionally accredited U.S. university and applicants should be accepted by June 1st, 2013.

 

 FIELDS OF STUDY

 

 Preference will be given to those proposals which are consistent with MACEE’s overall thematic approach for Fulbright awards, emphasizing these 5 general areas of study:

 

American Studies

Malaysian Studies

Islamic Studies

Comparative Religion

Economics and Technology Transfer

Issues in Contemporary Society

International Relations

However, students applying for any other field of study than those mentioned above are encouraged to apply, as all highly qualified applicants will be considered.  Students applying for MBA should take note that preferences are given to other fields of study.

 

ELIGIBILITY

 To be considered for selection under this program, students shall:

 

Possess Malaysian citizenship;

Be no more than 35 years of age at the time of application. Applicant above 35 years of age will be considered on case by case basis.

Be in good health;

Have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with Honors (Hons.) and cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or its equivalent;

Must have a TOEFL* score of at least 100 (internet based test) on a test taken no more than two years prior to the time of application (note: certain fields and/or institutions may require a higher score).

Must have a GMAT*, GRE*, GRE subject test* with minimum score as required by the institution of your choice.  Please check with programs or universities that you are planning to apply about the required test. 

Be available for interview in Kuala Lumpur.

Be prepared to return to Malaysia immediately upon completion of study.

The Following Individuals Are Not Eligible.

Individuals who are or have already been enrolled in a graduate degree program at an American university and who seek nomination in order to complete said program.

Individuals who seek nomination in order to complete a second masters degree or doctoral degree.

Individuals who intend to pursue internship, residency or research at a U.S. school of medicine, nursing, dentistry or veterinary medicine.

Individuals who are working or currently studying in USA. To be eligible, applicants MUST have returned to Malaysia at least ONE year before the announcement date (March 1st, 2010) for this award.

A complete application includes :

4 copies of application form with photograph

4 certified true copies of university transcript(s) for all years of academic study.

4 certified true copies of degree certificates from all institutions attended.

4 copies of  TOEFL/GMAT/GRE score reports.

3 letters of reference. Letter of reference is confidential and hard copy should be in a sealed envelope.

Most universities will require that all graduate students (regardless of field of study) included a thesis abstract or research paper (translated into English) that was completed during previous university-level studies. (Please attach 4 copies if any).

2012-2013 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program

2012-2013 GLOBAL UNDERGRADUATE EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Looking for an enriching undergraduate experience in an American college or university?

The Global UGRAD Program provides scholarships for one semester or one academic year of U.S. study in a non-degree program. This program is funded by U.S. Department of State. The goal of the program is to provide a diverse group of emerging student leaders, from non-elite and under-represented groups with a substantive exchange experience at a U.S. College or University.

Successful applicants can expect an in-depth exposure to U.S. society, culture and academic institutions by engaging in substantive academic exchanges at colleges and universities across the country. Students accepted into the one-semester program will travel in the fall 2012 (Aug-Sept) or in the winter (January). The length and start date of the scholarship award will depend upon the student’s interests and availability. 

 

Participants will not be able to choose their host institutions; however, based on academic interests, the program will attempt to place them at the most appropriate participating host institution. This is a non-degree program and it will be the participants’ responsibility to check with their home institutions whether any credits accumulated during the exchange can be transferred.

All Global UGRAD program participants will be enrolled full-time in undergraduate course work chosen from the host institutions existing curriculum to allow students ample opportunity for substantive interaction with U.S. faculty and student peers, and for exposure to U.S. academic and classroom culture. To ensure that students succeed in their new  academic environment, host institutions will offer instructions on topics including  academic research and writing, critical thinking, time management, note-taking and studying for and taking tests. Participants will live on-campus with American peers.

Participants will be required to participate in a minimum of ten hours of community service activities per semester. An internship component will be required for all academic-year participants during the academic component of the program. Internships will be related to each participant’s field of study and/or career plans. They will also be required to enroll in at least one course per semester in a U.S. studies field, such as American History, Literature or Government. Scholarships will be available in all academic fields of study.

 

Per J-1 visa regulations, applicants from the fields of medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, pharmacology, or other clinical fields of study, that direct patient care, including animal care, is not permitted and therefore academic course and/or program activities (e.g. internships) at participating host institutions may be limited.

 

 

ELIGIBILITY

Malaysian citizens only.

Participants must be 18 years of age when they arrive in the U.S. Additionally, participants should be 24 years or younger at the time of application.

Eligible students need to be currently enrolled and have completed at least one year of undergraduate study at a local institution by the time their UGRAD programs begins. Participants must also have at least one term of study remaining when they complete the program and have coursework to complete at their home institution before they graduate.

2012-2013 International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP)

2013 - INTERNATIONAL LEADERS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM (ILEP)

Application deadline: April 30, 2012

The International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State (ECA/A/S/X) and is implemented by IREX (the international Research & Exchange Board), a Washington, DC based non-profit organization. ECA/A/S/X will provide the funding and overall policy guidance for this program 

ECA/A/S/X is planning to bring approximately 75 international teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), social studies, math or science to the United States for a semester-long (5 months) professional development program beginning

in January of 2013. Teachers will be placed in cohorts of about 15 teachers at five U.S. universities that will be selected through a competitive process.

 

The program will consist of academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, curriculum development, lesson planning, and teaching strategies and instructional technology training. All participants will receive a technology allowance to purchase laptops or other technology tools. Participants will audit two courses in the host university’s School or Department of Education, and thus will be part of the general university community. If necessary, candidates will also receive ongoing English language assistance during their academic program. The program will also include a minimum 90 hours internship in a U.S. secondary school to actively engage participants in the U.S. classroom environment. Cultural enrichment, mentoring, and support will be provided to participants throughout the program. MACEE will nominate 10 teachers for this program but it is subject to funding from U.S. Department of State.

 

 


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA


  • Be citizens of Malaysia.
  • Be secondary-level, full time teachers with a bachelors degree or equivalent and have five or more years of classroom experience in  English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Social Studies, Math or Science.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must reside in Malaysia at the time of application.

Please note that this is a program for practicing teachers. Ministry of Education officials, educational administrators and full-time teacher trainers, university faculty, private English language tutors and teachers from schools primarily serving expatriates are not eligible.

 

 

POST-PROGRAM SUPPORT


After returning home, teachers will be eligible to request from ECA/A/S/X for essential teaching materials, follow-on training for other teachers, collaborative projects between participating American schools and their home schools, and other activities that build on the exchange experience. IREX will distribute application materials and disburse funds directly to the winning applicants once post concurs.

 MACEE will recruit, interview and nominate outstanding teachers for the program. An independent panel based in Washington, D.C. will determine the final selection in August 2012. Participants will be notified of their selection by end of September 2012.

Tentative Interview Time: Second week of May, 2012 and only shortlisted candidates will be called for interview.

English Language Testing:
All candidates nominated for the program must take the iBT Toefl test. MACEE will make the testing arrangements.  Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please answer all questions as fully as possible.
