American Fulbrighters

2011 ETA Fulbrighters

We are proud to present you the English Teaching Assistance (ETA) participants of 2011. Having arrived in early January, they are currently based all across Malaysia assisting teachers at local schools in educating Malaysian students in the English language as well as sharing their global experiences that you cannot find anywhere else.

Nou Chang

Nou Chang was born in Thailand but grew up in Rochester, MN.  She is a 2010 graduate of Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN with majors in Biology and English and a minor in Religion.  Nou loves to travel, and has gone on many study abroad trips to Asia, Mexico, and Central America where she was a member of a medical mission team. She has a deep interest in individual and community health, and spends the majority of her time volunteering with local hospitals and organizations.  She was involved with developing and implementing a community service project for homeless Hmong refugee children and was a nutrition education teacher to 1st through 6th graders. Nou has worked in many different positions including as an administrative assistant to a pharmacy benefit management company called Prime Therapeutics, and most recently, as a study research assistant at Mayo Clinic, Rochester.

Nou’s Fulbright will be to Malaysia on an English Teaching Assistantship grant.  She hopes that she will contribute to the development of proficiency in the English language among students in Malaysia and in the sharing and understanding of the U.S. and Malaysia culture and customs.  Her experience in Malaysia will greatly contribute to her future career, which is to be competent international medical doctor.

Blair Daly Raised in Seattle, Washington, Blair Daly completed a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences at Whitworth University. In 2009 he studied for one semester at University Malaysia Sarawak. This experience gave him a deep affection for Malaysia and a desire to return in a teaching role.  Beyond his interests in education and travel, Blair is an experienced athlete and jazz drummer.
Lynn ElHarake

Lynn ElHarake is a native of Beckley, West Virginia. A Class of 2010 graduate from Duke University, Lynn double majored in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy and Arabic.  While at Duke, she participated and held leadership positions in a number of organizations, most notably: Vice President of Administration for Kappa Alpha Theta sorority; Head Facilitator for LEAPS, a service-learning organization that aims to bring together philanthropy and academics; and Special Events Chair of the Duke-UNC Basketball Marathon, an annual philanthropic event held to raise money for special-needs children in North Carolina. Lynn also tutored beginner and intermediate level Arabic students at Duke University as well as students from surrounding high schools.

Lynn spent a summer in Cape Town, South Africa, working for the Treatment Action Campaign, the leading HIV/AIDS advocacy organization in Africa. She also spent her senior year as a research assistant for a grant proposal that- if accepted- will focus on assessing HIV/AIDS infection rates and suggesting prevention strategies for sex workers and their male partners in Beirut, Lebanon. Lynn is currently working as a research assistant to the Dean of Health Sciences the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Her experiences there have included conducting extensive literary analysis on the topic of ‘war and health;’ assisting with community health voluntary training workshops and projects; and conducting surveys concerning the Lebanese youth perspective on prescription drug use/abuse. In regards to future professional goals, Lynn is planning to pursue a masters degree and/or PhD in either public health or development work. Eventually, she hopes to find (or create) a career that allows her to combine her passions for health advocacy, community development, and traveling.

Billy Ford Billy Ford, a Richmond Virginia native, is a recent graduate of Hamilton College. At Hamilton, Billy majored in Religious Studies and minored in Public Policy and Philosophy. His interests include coaching soccer, playing cello and Eastern religions, but his main passion lies in the study of religious freedom. In 2009 he spent nine months in Vietnam, where he studied the tenuous relationship between religion and government. His research culminated in a 75-page paper, which concluded Vietnam has made tremendous strides towards greater religious freedom in recent years. Billy also spent four months teaching English to college students in Vietnam, where he found a new love for teaching. After returning to the United States and graduating, Billy took a position in inner city Richmond, where he taught personal finance skills to middle school students. He hopes to build on his passion for teaching as well as his interest in the relationship between religion and government, during his time in Malaysia.
Meredyth Haas Meredyth Haas graduated from the University of Virginia in 2010 with a Masters in Public Policy and a Bachelor of Arts in Government. At UVA, she focused her studies on domestic and international education policy, and has worked for DC Public Schools and the Center for Children’s Law and Policy in Washington, DC. Her research interests include special education law, teacher compensation reform, and juvenile justice education. While teaching English in Malaysia, she hopes to learn more about international special education provisions, and is eager to learn the Malaysian language and customs. Meredyth has taught English as a second language to immigrants in Charlottesville, Virginia as well as students in Shanghai, China. In college, Meredyth was a program director for an ESL tutoring volunteer group, served on her class council, and volunteered in the undergraduate admissions office. She enjoys hiking, baking, and exploring new places and cuisines.
Rebecca Haverson Rebecca Haverson graduated from Muhenberg College in 2010 with a double major in international relations and dance performance/choreography. Rebecca continues to pursue both areas of interest, entertaining the possibility that she might at some point find an intersection between the two. Her interest in the sociology of developing nations led her to Thailand, where she studied human rights and sustainable development, and to a summer internship at Save the Children, where she worked as a researcher in the Child Protection Department. She was also a writing tutor throughout college and editor in chief of the college’s alternative online newspaper, The Advocate. Most recently, Rebecca spent the summer interning at The Yard arts colony in Martha’s Vineyard, teaching community dance classes and working as an assistant to the artistic director. She has recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and at the Alvin Ailey City Center in New York City, among others.
Megan Huber Megan Huber is a native of Rockvile, Maryland and a 2010 graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She graduated with a major in Political Science and minors in International Studies and History. Megan has a strong interest in international educational development, especially as it relates to post conflict reconstruction. To pursue this interest, she spent three months during the summer of her sophomore year living in Kathmandu, Nepal working for UNESCO and researching female education in the post-conflict nation. She has also worked as a research assistant for a university project related to refugees and militancy challenges in eastern Africa and spent four years working in Wake Forest’s Center for International Studies. Megan will be working as an English Teaching Assistant in a secondary school in Malaysia’s Terennganu Province.
Anna Littlehale Anna Littlehale, born in Portland, Maine, now calls Glen Ellyn, Illinois home. Anna is a 2010 graduate from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a BA in Psychology and a Massachusetts Teaching License in Elementary Education.  During her college years, Anna mentored at-risk youth in Denmark, tutored Asian and African refugees in her hometown and most recently, interned at a Montessori preschool.  Also, Anna’s love of service work led her to New Orleans four years in a row and to get involved as a community service organizer.  As a Fulbright Scholar, Anna will be teaching English to primary or secondary students in the region of Terrenganu, Malaysia.  In addition, she will be exploring the relationship between contemplative practices and the learning process in school.
Anirudh Rajashekar

Anirudh Rajashekar is a 2010 graduate of Amherst College majoring in History and Economics.  He was born in India, but has grown up in Indonesia, Singapore and California.  Anirudh has worked in my different industries including advertising, finance and non-profit work.  He spent his most recent summer teaching English to children between the ages of 12 and 16.  Anirudh is passionate about international affairs and history, and hopes to eventually work as a civil servant for the US government.

In his freetime, Anirudh is an avid sportsperson, and divides his time playing cricket or watching soccer.  He is a die-hard Tottenham Hotspur fan and believes that Harry Redknapp will guide the team to
Champions League glory in the near future.

Elise Russell

Elise Russell is a 2010 graduate of the University of Rochester and a native of Kenosha, Wisconsin.  She graduated with a major in Psychology and a strong interest in cross-cultural psychology, having studied abroad several times in Europe, the Caribbean, and Kenya.  She has worked with young children in a variety of settings, such as day cares and a therapeutic after-school program, and has been involved with research in personality psychology, child development and maltreatment, and the structure and function of Kenyan lullabies.

Elise’s Fulbright work centers on immersive English language instruction to high school students in the Terengganu Province.  She hopes to inspire the young people in her classroom to explore not only a new language, but also the rich opportunities and cultural variety of the global community that it opens up to them.

Dakari Taylor-Watson Dakari Taylor-Watson currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia. He graduated from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland with a B.S. in Biology. He is a Physical Therapist Technician working with patients as well as coaching track and field. His career ambition is to become an orthopedic surgeon and become a doctor to elite athletes and work with pediatrics. In college, he played both American football and ran track and field on the varsity teams. He was able to teach what life lessons he learned to others in the inner city and surrounding communities.

Dakari has served as a peer mentor, grade school leader, and advisor to kids aging from 10 to 19 while at college. He was a key proprietor in contributing to the growth of a Baltimore school mentoring program, Morgan Mentors Winston Winners. During his summers away from school, he served as a camp counselor in Summer Fun, a program designed to help kids with reading, writing, and arithmetic as well as educational field trips. Dakari realizes that this is the opportunity of a lifetime and is honored to be able to learn and teach while abroad. He hopes to gain a wealth of knowledge from a diverse and beautiful community and students while in Malaysia.

Olivia Werby Olivia Werby was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, which draws immigrants from all over the world. As a result she grew up surrounded by people of many diverse cultures, and began to cultivate a desire to experience what life was like in other countries. Olivia has since lived and studied in locations around the globe - in Spain, Ecuador, Botswana, Uganda, and Rwanda. Olivia graduated in 2010 from Pitzer College, with a degree in Sociology.

Olivia is also passionate about education - both learning and teaching - and has been an educator in the United States and abroad. She taught Creative Writing in a women's rehabilitation facility near Los Angeles, taught a preschool class in Botswana, and led a discussion group for indigenous girls in Ecuador. While in college, Olivia led the campus organization Feminist Coalition, and she is particularly interested in education as a tool for women's empowerment.

Olivia is very excited about the prospect of teaching conversational English in a Malaysian high school. She will do her best to make her classroom into a creative and exciting learning environment. In her spare time Olivia hopes to learn Bahasa Melayu and traditional Malaysian art forms.
Elizabeth Williams

Elizabeth Williams is a Los Angeles, CA native and 2010 Pitzer College graduate with a B.A. in Sociology and Africana Studies. While at Pitzer, she was an active volunteer tutor and workshop facilitator at Camps Afflerbaugh-Paige, a juvenile detention center for young men 13-18 through Pitzer’s Center for California Cultural and Social Issues. She was selected to be a Ronald E. McNair Scholar at Claremont Graduate University, and completed a research project that explored the effectiveness of education in the juvenile justice system in reducing recidivism rates amongst minority youth. In fall 2008, Elizabeth was a visiting student at Howard University and she studied abroad spring 2009 on the Pitzer College in Botswana program. Elizabeth served as the president of the Black Student Union at Pitzer College and a member of the Pan-African Student Association of the Claremont Colleges.

Most recently, Elizabeth works as an intern with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California’s Jails Project reentry pilot program where she is assisting with the creation of a civics and advocacy training curriculum for inmates’ families. In the summer 2010 she was a servant-leader intern with the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School Program at First New Christian Fellowship Church in Los Angeles, CA. Elizabeth is very excited to begin her Fulbright Fellowship as an English Teaching Assistant in Malaysia. Upon returning home, she plans to pursue a Masters in Social Work with the goal of becoming a social worker engaged in policymaking.

Andrea Williamson

Andrea Williamson is from Atlanta, Georgia.  In 2007,  she graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL with a major in Art History and a minor in Writing.  While in college, Andrea studied abroad in Australia and gained an in-depth look at Aboriginal and Pacific Art.  She also spent a summer working on an archaeological excavation in Troia, Portugal.  Outside of the classroom, Andrea devoted most of her time to service learning, interning at local museums, and mentoring students.

Upon graduation, Andrea began working as an Admission Counselor at Rollins and began her Masters in Business Administration at the Crummer Graduate School of Business. She graduated in 2010 with concentrations in Management and Marketing.  Andrea is grateful for the opportunity to become an English Teaching Assistant in Terengganu.  She hopes to research how varying cultures in Malaysia express themselves through art and visual representations.

Leigh Wilson-Mattson Hello, my name is Leigh Wilson-Mattson.  Currently, I live in Moorhead, Minn.  In 2009, I graduated with a degree in Communication Studies from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM).  Along with
communication, art is an important part of my life; I am excited to experience Malay culture through local art and differing communication styles.  During my time at MSUM, I became active in multiple student
organizations and acquired leadership roles such as Student Body President.  Working with students from different parts of the world allowed me to view my surroundings differently.  I continued to expand my interests as I interned in U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan’s Office, Prairie Public Broadcasting, and North Dakota Public Radio.  Studying different styles of communication in differing cultures broadens one’s view of the world.  I am thrilled to be further broadening my experiences with the opportunity to see and live in Malaysia as a Fulbright Fellow.
Kelsey Whiting-Jones Kelsey Whiting-Jones is a native of western Massachusetts and a 2010 graduate of the University of Massachusetts- Amherst with a double major in Classics and History and a minor in Political Science.
Kelsey loves languages and has studied both French and Italian, practicing the later on her semester abroad in Rome, Italy. In her free time she likes to participate in athletics, especially Lacrosse and Field Hockey, to dance, to sing, and to travel. After teaching English in Malaysia, Kelsey hopes to pursue a career in International Relations with a focus on Diplomacy.
Kelley M. Whitson

Kelley M. Whitson was born and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia in December 2009. During the fall semester of her junior year, Kelley studied abroad in Peru. While in Peru, she was able to teach conversational English to adult and adolescent domestic workers, and to conduct research on the access to education for Peruvian domestic workers.

She learned early in her life that education provides the foundation for success and that foundation is something that can never be taken away. Kelley’s life experiences and her love of people have prompted her to reach out to disadvantaged groups and to help them become more competitive in reaching their full potential. It is with this in mind that she is excited to teach and interact with Malaysian youth.

Kelley also plans to spend her free time researching the Malaysian celebratory and political culture of performance and establishing a mentoring program for local students. Kelley’s passion lies in utilizing
education as a means for personal and economic development. As a result of her interests and passions, she plans to obtain a Master’s Degree in International Development upon her return to the United States.
