INTERNATIONAL LEADERS IN
EDUCATION PROGRAM (ILEP)

The International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State (ECA) and is implemented by IREX ( the international Research & Exchange Board), a Washington, DC based non-profit organization. ECA will provide the funding and overall policy guidance for this program
ILEP will bring outstanding secondary school teachers from the Near East, South Asia and Southeast Asia to the U.S. for a five-month professional development program at a U.S. university, combining academic seminars with an eight-week internships in a U.S. secondary school. Enhance teachers’ expertise in their teaching
discipline and equip them with a deeper
understanding of best practices in teaching methodologies,
lesson planning and the use of
technology in teaching.
Program purpose :
- To enhance teachers’ expertise in their teaching discipline and equip them with a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching methodologies, lesson planning and the use of technology in teaching.
- Create among the educators a more nuanced understanding of the U.S.
The program will consist of academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, curriculum development, lesson planning and teaching strategies with an eight eight-week internship in a U.S. secondary school to actively engage participants in the U.S. classroom environment. Cultural enrichment, mentoring and support will be provided to participants throughout the program.
The purpose of this program is to develop productive and lasting relationships and mutual understanding between the U.S. and international teachers and their students. Also, to improve teaching in participating countries by preparing participants to serve as teacher leaders, who upon returning home will apply and share their experience and skills with peers and students.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA |

- Be secondary-level, full time teachers with five or more years of
classroom experience in disciplines including English as a Foreign
Language, Social Studies, Civics, Mathematics or Science
- Be proficient in written and spoken English
- Must reside in Malaysia at the time of application
Ministry of Education officials, educational administrators and full-time teacher trainers, university faculty and private English Language tutors are not eligible to apply.

POST-PROGRAM SUPPORT |

After returning home, teachers will be eligible to participate in a small grants program through which essential teaching materials, follow-on training for other teachers, collaborative projects between participating American schools and their home schools, and support for other activities that build on the exchange experience may be requested. IREX will distribute funds directly to the wining applicants.
Some grantees will also assume responsibility for arranging two-week follow-up visits for U.S. teachers to the grantees’ schools and communities in the spring or summer of 2011.

The application deadline is May 25, 2010. MACEE will recruit, interview and rank order outstanding teachers for the program. An independent panel based in Washington, D.C. will determine the final selection in July 2010. Participants will be notified of their selection by the end of August 2010.
Tentative Interview Date: June 4, 2010
English Language Testing: All candidates nominated for the program must take the Institutional Toefl test. Teachers with Toefl scores of 500 or higher on written test will be eligible for the program. The ITP test will be administered at MACEE after the interview, tentatively on June 4, 2010.
Dependents: Dependents are not allowed to come to the United States on this program.
